According to the United Nations, 120 million people worldwide are living in Forced displacement due to war, conflict, and oppression. In the current global situation, the number of displaced people has been termed a ‘horrifying complaint’ by the World Organization. News from AFP.

The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, says the number of forced displacements is now at an all-time high. Conflicts in regions such as Gaza, Sudan, and Myanmar are forcing people to flee their homes. The agency stated on Thursday that the number of displaced people worldwide is equal to the total population of Japan.

Filippo Grandi, the head of the United Nations refugee agency, told reporters, “Conflict is one of the main catalysts behind these cases of mass displacement.”

According to UNHCR in their report, 11.73 million people were displaced at the end of last year. By the end of April this year, the number of displaced people has reached about 120 million.

The United Nations refugee agency says the number of displaced people a year ago was 110 million. The number of displaced people has been steadily increasing over the past 12 years and has nearly tripled since 2012. New and changing crises, as well as unresolved long-term crises, continue to increase the number of displaced people.

Filippo Grandi highlights the growing crisis and how climate change is driving population migration and conflict. Last year, UNHCR declared 43 states of emergency in 29 countries. Grandi said the way in which conflict is spreading is flouting international law and sometimes involves intimidation for specific purposes. He admits that the likelihood of such trends diminishing is low.

According to UNHCR’s Thursday report, of the 120 million displaced people, 68.3 million were internally displaced in 2023. Additionally, 43.4 million people have come under the protection of refugees and international protection.

The report states that Sudan’s civil war has played a key role in increasing the number of displaced people. By the end of 2023, the number of displaced people in the country stands at 10 million. But this number is increasing.

Moreover, armed conflict has forced millions of people to flee their homes in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Myanmar. In addition, about 1.7 million people live in extreme insecurity in the Gaza Strip. About three-quarters of a million people have been displaced by the war in Ukraine, and another seven and a half million people have been displaced internally.

Furthermore, the civil war in Syria has forced more than 1.38 million people to flee their homes.
